Canon Photo Marathon 2016!

Canon Photo Marathon 2016!

Just finished the Canon Photo Marathon! I had a great time shooting and met some very interesting people in the process. Loved doing the interviews with the Canon film crew as well, I hope I make it into the video! Take a look at my submissions after the break.

My final three submissions, completely shot in camera (with some help with custom picture styles) are as follows:

The shots came out a little darker than I expected as I was editing on my camera screen in a dark hall before the deadline. It’s a lesson to turn down the camera brightness and double check the histogram before submitting the final photos. The cross-device brightness settings aren’t really standardized the way that color profiles are, making it extremely difficult to get accurate prints vs on-screen reproduction, let alone accurate brightness reproduction across devices. It’s an amazingly complex subject I’ve delved into a few times. Suffice it to say, you need to have one set of standards setup for online and on-screen reproduction and another for print. That said, I was going for a darker look with crushed blacks for a low-key lighting setup but still retain a full tonal range in the highlights.

Wish me luck! I’ll post some outtakes when I can.
